Foundations Course, Part One
Building a foundation that lasts...
OVERVIEW
My goal with this unique, one-on-one and highly personalized, kind of training will be to teach, guide, encourage and inspire students who are looking for a more structured way of learning and growing in Jiu Jitsu - especially those of you who already teach the art.
Here are the areas I will cover in this first course:
• Mindsets
• Positions
• Positioning
• Fundamental Movements
• Postures
• Front mount escapes
• A highly effective guard pass
• A highly effective side mount control hold
• A simple transition
• A few submissions
• An important sweep
• A couple of drills that combine everything above
• Self-defense against grabs
• Self-defense against strikes
• Self-defense against a knife
• Some important thoughts on self-defense
The combination of all of these will lay a foundation for part two of this program!
In part two of the course, I will expand upon the above-mentioned topics as well as add a few new topics (e.g. How to become a great training partner, How to interact with me weekly or monthly, Your homework assignment, Your first examination, How to find great training partners to help you progress, etc...).
The goals of these courses are to (a) lay a firm foundation in your mindsets, positioning, movements and technique and (b) teach you a structured progression in training [as well as give you several examinations along the way] so you can make continued progress in your journey (because learning technique IS NEVER ENOUGH to progress in any art). By the time you reach Foundations Course #5 (the final course before the individual stripe / belt courses), you will have learned enough principles, concepts and training methods to guide you all the way to black belt in Jiu Jitsu (if that's where you want to go).
For those of you who will go beyond the training and will choose to test with me, you will have a weekly or monthly FaceTime, Skype or Messenger meetings with me to (a) talk with your about and/or review your progress, (b) ask any questions you might have, and (c) talk about your training assignments / goals. This way, we can emulate the academy environment as well as do things many academy instructors don’t do (e.g. give you one-on-one time with your instructor at a reasonable price, give you personal feedback on your current strengths / weaknesses / abilities, etc…).
The big picture for all of this is simple:
Over the course of your training with me, those of you who will choose to train AND test with me will have an experienced and caring black belt looking over your shoulder, guiding, teaching, encouraging and inspiring you (each week or each month) as you progress in Jiu Jitsu. And, I anxiously look forward to sharing this journey with you!

GOALS
Here are the goals for this course:
1. Teach students the three most often used positions in Jiu Jitsu (and how to get better at them).
2. Teach students the importance of the use of proper positioning (and how it affects endurance).
3. Teach students a series of related techniques that lead to drilling (an important way of training).
4. Teach students the first three levels of the Harris Jiu Jitsu training method (having a structure to training).
5. Teach students how to train properly, safely and enjoyably (primary goals of every Jiu Jitsu student).
6. Teach students some basic ideas on self-defense (an important area of training for all students).
7. Lay a foundation in your skill sets for part two in this series (there will be five courses in all).
Does this sound like a plan? Do you have questions or comments? If so, email me here.
I hope to see you on the inside,
Roy Harris

Read MoreI found this course to be an excellent tool to for those looking to get some functional and repeatable skill sets added to their personal arsenal in a quick way. Not only do aspiring BJJ students benefit from this material, but I feel martial artists from all backgrounds can benefit from this material. Mr. Harris provides written feedback for many lessons as well which help to solidify the student's training and education. Can't wait to see more of the lessons "Text" areas get updated or completed with more information from Mr. Harris. Overall, just a fantastic resource for studying martial arts.

As a long-time white belt, I can attest that these techniques allow me to hold my own and even threaten submission on more experienced opponents.

Read MoreI have been training just under ten years, 6 of these years I trained full time as a professional mma fighter. I now own, and run my own mma school and have trained with many of the very best MMA fighters and coachs in the game during this time. Mr. Roy Harris's knowledge, instruction, attention to detail is bar-non the best I have ever seen in my time in martial arts.

Read MoreI really appreciate your teaching methods. There are two aspects of the instructional videos that I really appreciate. First, I especially like how you have created "bite-size" videos that aren't encumbered by too much techniques. This allows me (the student) to absorb a few concepts and not get lost. I have seen many videos where the instruction is too "busy"; too much techniques, too little explanation. Second, I also like the text components to each video where you stress items students need to concentrate on. As an example, you indicate that real learning occurs by drilling the fundamentals. Having experience in a couple other martial arts, I couldn't agree more. My only wish is that there was a part two, where I could continue my jiu jitsu journey.

Read MoreThis is a great course and its helping my development so much! Lots of tips and tricks on how to get a good solid game with good fundamentals and take away the openings your opponent want to take advantage of. I'm a brownbelt in bjj and I'm picking up many new and forgotten details that help me in the different positions. Also the platform is great to keep and overview of your progress and to go back and forward looking at videos and documents again. Looking forward to continue this course! :)

Read MoreMr Harris course is excellent for new white belts and higher belts for review. Materials can escape the mind through higher belts due to more rolling and less focus on simplification. True, as one gets older, tried and true techniques with great position and posture will keep one still in the game.

Read MoreThis course is an excellent and gentle introduction to BJJ (and self-defense) from first principles - positions and positioning (body and hands), movements, drills, and a handful of high-percentage finishes with some cool details. Correct mindset, principles, and training methods are emphasized, rather than overwhelming the student with plenty of techniques. Personally, I am eagerly anticipating the next parts and continuations of these Foundations courses (whenever they are ready and available).
